What is rigidity?

Rigidity is the term used to describe stiff or inflexible muscles and is one of the most common symptoms of Parkinson’s. Rigidity can affect all the muscles in the body and can impact on patterns of walking and facial expression. People with Parkinson’s might also find that muscle stiffness affects their ability to do everyday tasks like getting dressed or getting on or off furniture.

What can help?

Keep moving!

Keeping muscles moving with regular exercise can help to strengthen them and improve flexibility and movement. There is more information about exercises for different parts of the body in the exercise section.

Medication

Medication for Parkinson’s which increases the amount of dopamine available in the brain may help to improve muscle rigidity.

If you are concerned about stiffness and rigidity then please contact your Parkinson’s specialist team or your GP.
